Sr. Director, Search and Evaluation

This position will play an integral part in the Global Strategy & Business Development organization supporting the expansion of Sun’s product portfolio in therapeutic areas of strategic interest. The individual will be responsible for Search and Evaluation activities in the US with a strong emphasis on clinical stage assets in Immunology, Onco-Dermatology and Ophthalmology.

Key responsibilities:

• Actively monitor the innovation landscape and identify promising external assets aligned with Sun’s capabilities and strategic objectives.
• Triage opportunities in partnership with key stakeholders in the development and commercial groups and prioritize selected ones for further assessment.
• Set up cross-functional due-diligence teams and produce high-quality scientific assessments for target opportunities that facilitate clear decisions.
• Integrate input from subject matter experts to enable a robust characterization of the technical merits and risks of an external opportunity  
• Support the overall BD process by providing inputs as required for the business case for potential deals; provide technical support to inform deal terns and support contracting, integration and alliance management as needed.
• Provide project management and leadership support to progress opportunities through the BD and governance process
• Actively build and manage relationships with emerging and established companies, and represent Sun at partnering meetings, industry events and medical conferences.

Qualifications:

• Advanced degree (PhD, MD) in a life sciences discipline, with >10 years’ experience in the pharmaceutical or biotech industry. Advanced business degree and/or relevant professional experience in management consulting, venture capital or life-sciences investing is a plus.
• Hands-on experience in business development activities including search & evaluation, partnering, transactions or other areas; a strong track record of working across different deal types -supporting successful deals is preferred.
• Demonstrated scientific excellence in immunology and/or oncology.
• Deep knowledge of drug discovery, development and regulatory process with hands-on experience in least one area of drug development; clinical drug development experience is highly desirable.
• Strong project management skills with experience running cross functional teams and managing diverse stakeholders.
• Strong interpersonal skills and comfortable working in a cross-cultural environment.
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to synthesize complex information for presentation to collaborators and management.
• Ability to handle tight timelines and manage complex, fast-moving projects.
• Strong network across the pharmaceutical, biotech and investor community
